Jim Vlahakis was elected Sheriff of Yankton County in 2010 and took office in January of 2011. Sheriff
Vlahakis has served in law enforcement for the past 33 years. He began his law enforcemnet career
in 1978 as a patrol officer with the Norfolk, Nebraska Police Department. Sheriff Vlahakis worked a short time
for the Yankton Police Department and then served over nine years with the Yankton County Sheriff's
Office where he served as the Chief Deputy Sheriff.
In 1989 Sheriff Vlahakis began a career with the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation where
he served as a Special Agent, Supervisory Special Agent, Assistant Director for field operations and
finished his career as Director of DCI retiring in 2008.
From 2008 up until his election as Yankton County Sheriff he served as a Special Assistant Attorney
General assisting in the implementation and management of the South Dakota24/7 program.
Sheriff Vlahakis is a graduate of the National Sheriffs Institute, FBI National Academy 189th session
and the FBI executive development program and has accumulated over 3000 hours of advanced training
in all areas of law enforcement.
