Detective - Deputy Sheriff (Non-EXEMPT)

Position Objective:
The Deputy Detective is charged with the day-to-day activities assigned to the Criminal Investigation Department (commonly referred to as Investigators). The Detective reports to their Sergeant and Captain in Investigations. The Detective serves a critical role in ensuring and meeting the overall demands of the job while maintaining high standards of public service and professionalism.
The Detective will assist in reported crimes inside the Yankton County Jail, PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) reports, internet crimes against children, victim services, criminal intelligence, unified narcotics task force, sex offender registry, evidence management, department inventory, internal affairs investigations, courtroom security, transports, civil process and assist in background investigations for future employees.
Essential Functions:
  • Reviewing, editing, and approving investigation case closures.
  • Maintaining records of investigators’ activities.
  • Coordinating activities with other divisions and serving as liaison with community service organizations and other law enforcement agencies, including the State’s Attorney’s Office.
  • Conducting monthly investigator case status reviews and documenting results.
  • Determining needs of the Investigations department, training and otherwise, and preparing requests or scheduling training accordingly.
  • Following-up, resolving, or referring complaints or concerns of assigned personnel.
  • Ensuring that all office rules and policies are adhered to.
  • Apprising of any unusual occurrence or cases of a sensitive nature.
  • Maintaining ability to testify as a credible witness in court.
  • Attending meetings and trainings as required.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by command staff.

Experience and/or Education Required:
  • Must meet or exceed all standards and testing requirements as defined in policy.
  • HS Diploma or GED required; Formal education in human services or criminal justice desired.
  • Must meet Global Policy Promotional Process position requirements.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid South Dakota Driver’s License within 90 days of moving to South Dakota.
Working Environment:
Work is performed in office and field environments.
Physical Requirements:
The position requires data entry, driving, public speaking, vision, hearing, standing, walking, bending, stooping, running, heavy lifting and carrying, and safely and effectively using tools of the trade (firearms, tasers, etc.). May be exposed to hazardous conditions, extreme weather conditions, infectious diseases, air and waterborne pathogens, body fluids, combative and assaultive suspects and criminals. Work is performed in office and field environments. Detective must possess sufficient physical capability to overcome and restrain a combative or resistive subject and are required to demonstrate compliance with physical fitness standards annually. The Detective must demonstrate proficiency with assigned firearm during pre-service training and annually thereafter per policy.

Detention Deputy (Non-Exempt)

is under the direct supervision of the Jail Administrator, Yankton County Sheriff and is responsible for the supervision of jail inmates, maintaining security and safety for inmates and jail staff.
Benefits include full health insurance for employee, paid holidays, vacation and sick time. A person in this position will be a class B member of the South Dakota Retirement system.

Salary : $24.29
The general duties include, but are not limited to the following:
• Maintain a variety of records as related to the legal process involving the jail.
• Fingerprint and photograph inmates. Classify, screen, and assign inmates to housing.
• Issue jail clothing, bedding, and hygiene items to inmates. Launder items to maintain health and hygiene.
• Conduct physical checks on inmates for health and sanitation, well-being behaviors to prevent and/or to detect suicides and/or escape risks, as well as assaultive risks. Must be able to recognize and control possible conflicts.
• Assist in jail safety and security procedures to include the control of weapons, contraband, keys, tools, doors, and other related safety and security procedures. Disperse medication to the prisoners as prescribed by a licensed medical authority or within guidelines to ensure safety and security.
• Be responsible for the preparation, serving, and cleanup of meals.
• Assist in assigning inmates to work detail by screening, selecting, evaluating, and supervising.
• Perform cleaning and minor maintenance duties to ensure health and sanitation, and safety and security issues are following state and federal regulations.
• Document all incidents and complete needed reports in a detailed, factual, and relative to issue or topic.
• Attend training sessions and meetings as required
• Wear Personal Protective Equipment as deemed necessary
• Perform duties in a manner consistent with safe practices.
• Perform other such duties and functions as deemed necessary.


Compensation
24.29 per hour
